Ok, so before I wrote a post about American football and what it means to me. Like I said, sports captures the hearts and imaginations of millions of people around the world and football is our sport of choice. And every year at the end of the season the "World Championship" or also known as the Super Bowl (yea, I know America is the only one that really plays the sport) is played and an entire nation tunes in to watch. Super Bowl Sunday has a long history. I'm not going to get into the details of how it came to be, but more about what we do in America to "celebrate".
First of all, I always have to ask; why Super Bowl Sunday?!?! Why can't it be Super Bowl Saturday??? It's definitely a party event, and it would be great to be able to sleep in on Sunday morning and recover from the previous night's festivities instead of having to go to work Monday morning tired with a headache. The day after Super Bowl Sunday has to be one of the most unproductive Mondays on the American calendar. But, that’s the way it goes.
Pretty much everyone in America celebrates Super Bowl Sunday. Even people that don't really watch football or know anything about it. It's basically another American holiday. So what do we do to celebrate? People either go to a bar or go to someone's house to watch. I always prefer going to someone's house. It's usually a pot-luck style party. Everyone brings their specialty dish. Bourbon weenies, cheese dip and chips, buffalo wings, etc... If you're lucky someone will bring some good BBQ brisket or ribs. Everyone drinks more than they should and there is probably some betting going on between friends. And of course, you have to tune into the halftime commercials. The commercials are actually the highlight of the night for some people.
In Japan it's always Super Bowl Monday because of the time difference; which is kind of fun. I always make sure I'm free to watch. And if I'm lucky my team, The Kansas City Chiefs, will be there playing.
Shooters, home of Power English, is actually a great place to watch and is usually where I am since I've been living in Japan. This year's Super Bowl party will be held Monday, February 14th at Shooters Sports Bar & Grill. Doors open from 7:30. Cost will be 2,750円 which will include an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet and soft drinks.
So if you're free and want to feel a bit of American culture right here in Fushimi, Nagoya, come join me and a bunch of other crazy Americans enjoying the game. Something I always look forward to!
-Ron
